Dr. Banji Ajaka, the Commissioner for Health in Ondo State, has linked the rise in mental health issues across Nigeria to drug abuse among various age groups, including children, youths, and the elderly.
During a Mental Health Summit organized by the Niger Delta Youth Council (NDYC) in collaboration with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr. Ajaka expressed significant concern over the growing number of mental disorder cases. He revealed that the state government is planning to establish a rehabilitation center to support individuals struggling with substance abuse and mental health issues.
Represented by Dr. Sajo Sunday at the summit, Dr. Ajaka highlighted Nigeria’s troubling status as a hub for drug trafficking and consumption, particularly among the youth. He noted that a wide range of psychoactive substances are readily accessible in Nigeria, largely due to international drug traffickers using the country as a transit point between Southeast Asia, South America, Europe, and North America.
Dr. Ajaka emphasized that Ondo State has made considerable strides in preventing and treating substance abuse and related mental health conditions through various evidence-based initiatives and integrated healthcare approaches. He reiterated the state’s commitment to constructing a robust rehabilitation facility and called for collective efforts to combat drug abuse.
Prof. Michael Odimayo, Special Adviser to the Ondo State Governor on Health, also addressed the summit, attributing many mental health issues to the misuse of hard drugs. Prof. Odimayo acknowledged the prevalence of mental health problems in society and praised the NDDC for its initiatives. He emphasized the detrimental impact of hard drug use on the younger generation.
Engr. Jator Abido, National Coordinator of the Niger Delta Youth Council, advocated for the integration of mental health education into school curriculums. He suggested that this could help normalize discussions about mental health and equip students with necessary coping strategies. Abido also recommended the provision of accessible and confidential counseling services in schools and communities, and the potential benefits of online counseling for those unable to access physical services.
