Ogun State is poised to join the ranks of oil-producing states as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) prepares to start oil and gas exploration in the state.
Key figures in the oil industry, including Heineken Lokpobiri, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil); Mr. Osagie Okubor, Managing Director of Shell Petroleum Development Company Ltd; Engr. Gbenga Komolafe, Chief Executive of Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission; and Mr. Mele Kyari, Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd, visited Ogun State to discuss the federal government’s plans. They were welcomed by Governor Dapo Abiodun and his Deputy, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele.
Lokpobiri highlighted that Ogun State is part of the Dahomey Basin, which has significant hydrocarbon potential. He stated, “We decided to resume exploration in different Basins and reassure the people of Ogun State about the high potential for discoveries here. Our presence underscores the federal government’s commitment to exploration activities in Ogun State.”
He emphasized that oil and gas exploration is crucial for Nigeria’s economic prosperity and mentioned that their visit signifies the federal government’s dedication to boosting revenue through the oil and gas sector. “We are here to demonstrate our commitment to continuing exploration activities across the country, starting in Ogun and moving on to Sokoto State,” Lokpobiri added.
Kyari expressed optimism about the potential oil deposits in Ogun State, located in the Dahomey Basin corridor. He assured that the NNPCL is ready to commence exploration activities soon, with the expectation of finding oil in commercial quantities. Komolafe reiterated the federal government’s commitment to increasing oil reserves and enhancing national revenue through these exploration efforts.
