Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has launched 15 new Omi-Bus boats to enhance water transportation in the state, prioritizing efficient public transportation. The locally manufactured boats, with a 40-seat capacity and modern amenities, were commissioned at the Lagos State Waterways Authority, LASWA Jetty in Badore.
Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of reliable transportation for the city’s economic growth and citizens’ quality of life. He noted that the journey from Falomo to Badore now takes only 27 minutes, compared to 50 minutes to an hour by land. The governor stressed the need for private ferry operators to adhere to safety regulations, citing recent accidents caused by non-compliance.
The governor also announced that the cowry card payment system, currently used for ferries, will be integrated with BRT buses and train services for a seamless payment system. He thanked Caverton Marine for their partnership, demonstrating that local manufacturing is possible.
The Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Seun Osiyemi, praised the launch as a significant step towards achieving sustainable transportation, connecting communities, and fostering economic growth. The General Manager, LASWA, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, highlighted the agency’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and safety, aiming to provide a viable alternative mode of transportation.
